Prep at Buddina State School

Starting Prep is an exciting milestone, and at Buddina State School we focus on helping every child feel a strong sense of belonging from day one.

Our experienced Prep teachers and teacher aides support children as they transition into school and build the foundations for a successful move into Year 1. We nurture a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.

Is My Child Eligible?

Children must turn 5 years old by 30 June in the year they start Prep.

You can check your child's eligibility using the ready reckoner [External link].

Learning in Prep

Our Prep program builds the essential foundations for school success through a balance of play-based and structured learning.

We support children to develop:

  • Confidence, independence and a positive approach to learning
  • Thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Early language, literacy and numeracy skills
  • Gross and fine motor skills

How Children Learn

In Prep, children learn through active engagement in meaningful, hands-on experiences. They will:

  • Explore the world through imaginative and dramatic play
  • Make choices about what and how they learn
  • Investigate their interests and ask questions
  • Use blocks, materials and creative activities to build early maths skills
  • Develop communication skills through storytelling, drawing and writing

Specialist Learning Opportunities

Prep students also enjoy a range of specialist experiences, including:

  • Music lessons
  • Physical Education
  • Weekly library visits
